ARE YOU MARRYING FOR THE FAMILY?

"Don! You know that you can't go against mom's wish.... this girl is not loved by mom nor any member of this family. There is no connection between her and us." Advised Mat.

"You and I know what we have been thru as a family, from what happened in my marriage and how Emem, my ex wife nearly tore up the family... things should have been different if I had listen to mom and dad then.... Mat continued in sober tone, trying to talk Don from what he called avoiding mistake.

Remember,.. he continued. it has always been your plans that when you were ready to settle down and start your own family,  that you were going to bring a girl that was trained by both parents, both  parents living together and not the one gotten out of wedlock so as to avoid regretting ever getting married....

You know most girls gotten out of wedlock are like Ubanje spirit. They can separate families...." he added, staring at the opposite direction as if  to  recalled the countless times his family and that of the ex wife had settled series of dispute in his marriage that was barely two years then.

Mat marriage experience wasn't a pleasant one and he tried everything possible not to allow his only brother make the same mistake by marrying Eno, the girl he brought home to introduce to the family.

Eno was a decent girl, educated and well exposed too. Don had dated her for just three months and from what he saw in her, her character, decency and high sense of responsibility, convinced him that she was the right girl to marry.

The problem was how he was going to talk the family into accepting a girl that was gotten out of wedlock.

Don's mom from onset strongly opposed any idea of her two sons marrying any girl that was not gotten thru legitimate marriage.

Her opinion  was that such girls do not know the rudiments of marriage and how to keep their homes since they never learned from both parents. To add more fears to her already had convictions, Mat, her first son had married against her advice only for the girl to bring disunity to the family.

To further deteriorate the relationship between Eno and  Don's mom, on the first day Don took her home, in the morning Mrs. Ekom, Don's mom was up early, tidying and doing her morning chores. Eno was in bed with Don and  with the mindset that whenever she wakes she was going to help but Don's mom took it as an act of irresponsible woman that will make a terrible wife.

That afternoon Mrs. Ekom summoned her son, Don, to indoctrinate him into looking for another woman, citing various reasons why the son can not take Eno as a wife.

"Mom.. you know that I can't do that. I love Eno and I will want this family to accept her. She's not Emem, Mat ex wife....

Eno is a nice person mom, just that you have already made your decisions on this issue based on the fact that she was gotten out of wedlock but that doesn't make her a terrible person." Don lamented in a calm voice, looking for means to change the mother's mind about  Eno.

"Mom please.... he continue,  Allow me marry Eno and I promise that she won't post any threat to the unity of this family.... Please  mom... he concluded, waiting for the mom to say something.

The mom stood up, walk away from him in total disappointment over her son unwillingness to listen to her.

That evening Don couldn't sleep, he never wanted separating the family. He  has always wanted marrying a girl that the family  will accept.

He roll on the bed, thinking of what to do next to serve the situation and  bring peace and unity to his family. Eno wasn't a bad girl he thought but how would he convince the family to see her differently?

He thought of discontinuing with the relationship but he found nothing wrong with her. His mind ran back to when the father was alive. He would have sorted his advice on the issue too he thought but his dad was late.

The following morning, Don requested for his mom's presence to talk to her once and for all about taking Eno as a wife....

TO BE CONTINUED......

DON'T LEAVE WHEN IT IS TOO LATE.

The story . Udauk was too weak to continue with the evening chores around the house because of her pregnancy. She bent over the kitchen cabinet in search of a tuber of yam she was to prepare before her husband returned from work. At the point of stretching her hands to reach the tuber of yam under the cabin, she felt a sharp pain down her abdomen. Her left lap was swollen from the beating she got the previous night from the monster's husband. She was still short of three months from her due month. That's when she was to put to birth. The shape pain was accompanied by a loud scream. She dropped the knife she had with her and tried to settle on a table-size stool lying close to the gas cylinder in the kitchen, but she couldn't. She fell and started screaming, reached out to her phone, and dialed her husband. Mr. Sam had branched  Madam G's Native Kitchen to settle for a while before heading home as his habit demands. He was busy at his usual joint with a bottle of chill

JOURNEY OF NO RETURN.

The story. The atmosphere was heavy, that of apprehension and uncertainty as Iquo stared at the open space leading into the compound. It was around 10:33pm that evening.  A time in Ikot Ekim community when every household had put off their lamps and retired to bed. The nocturnal sound of night creatures made the night even more looming and intense.  Nsek has never stayed out so late no matter how fierce any argument with his wife was. In their 24 years of marriage, no matter the nature of the fights Iquo has had with her husband he will always come back home to rest in his hut.  As time ticked away, she stared at the open compound, struggling to fend off the call of nature with the hope her husband would appear at the far end of the compound.  Using her hand to support her chin, she wondered how things could change so fast. Her husband Nsek was no longer the man she married. He picked fights at every little argument and would end the night with curses, accusing Iquo of turning his on
