MARRIAGE GOES WRONG

The story....

"You won't kill my son.... you are not the first woman in marriage and you won't be the last. I was married too. After what was spent to bring you home, this is how you  insult  my son at my presence?...."

" ....So it is true that you have turned him to a piece of trash you handle anyhow you want...?" Mrs. Mbom asked rhetorically, finding it hard to believe her eyes. Her son was painted black/blue by her daughter in-law for what she described as a bad attitude.

That morning, Mbet had requested that the wife served him his breakfast  but she paid deaf ears  as if he was of no meaning to her.

Though Faith's anger and attitude was built on the incident of the previous night, Mbet never believed his wife could have acted in that manner even at the presence of his mom.

The night proceeding that morning, Mbet had picked a call from a certain girl the wife suspected to be his girlfriend owing to his attitude of hiding away from the wife everytime he wanted to make or receive some certain calls. This had set both faces against each other as Faith's position was being threatened by her husband's  attitude towards her especially since she didn't cement her place with childbirth.

Other times, Mbet have had a couple of quarrels with the wife too over her total negligence of his family. It was no longer digestible that Faith had turned against his family with how she has been handling issues related to them.

That morning incident presented Mrs. Mbom  a perfect opportunity to tame Faith after all her son has been telling her. She had had enough of her attitude with no child to show forth for

"...Kill your son? Don't you that your son is a womaniser?... Talk of marriage, how much did you spend in my marriage....? How much...? I want to know so that I can refund your money..... Faith flared, having had enough too.

"Please enough of this... I won't have you insult my mother at my presence.... stop it already. Just stop... enough of this nonsense...." Mbet tried to calm down the tension that was building like an hurricane between his wife and the mother. He was used to his wife insolent attitude but he couldn't believe the wife can talk back at his mom that way.

Faith too was searching for a chance to let lose of her anger after  her husband had reported her to the mother and the mother in-law had picked a phone to call to sermonised her carelessly as if she was of no use in her marital home.

"Have you seen what you've brought to this family and yourself..?

How could you marry someone who's heart is like stone?... Of all the girls in Akwa Ibom state, all what you needed was this woman from the blue you barely knew... Mrs. Mbom said looking disappointed as she stormed out of the sitting room.

She has been hearing of Faith's attitude but for her to display it before her very eyes was a sign that her son, Mbet landed in the wrong hands.

Mbet's relationship with Faith and how it metamorphosis to marriage was something he wondered how it happened. Though he needed to settle down but he never thought of settling down with a woman who will see his family as enemies, creating division between his family and himself.

The bond and unity he used to enjoy from his family was cut off as none of his siblings ever wanted to have anything to do with him due to how his wife treated them.

He recalled how his younger sibling came around his home but the wife acted cold dead as if she had an issue with his little brother.  To take her attitude to it apex, she refused giving the younger brother food to eat even at his demand.

This and many more made Mbet regret not allowing himself time with Faith before venturing into marriage.

Though initially Faith was what he felt he wanted as a wife but ever since their marriage, everyday was filled with regrets.

After the marriage Faith never bothered about his family let alone to ask about them. For four years they have married, she made it an habit of travelling to her family even in yuletide seasons without bothering to follow her husband to go meet his family.

To further worsen her relationship with that of her in-law, she had accused them of tying her womb in the presence of her husband since she was unable to conceive.

Mbet's marriage went totally wrong and he plunked into depression of how to solve the everlasting woes he found himself.

The bible version that says that "he who findeth a wife, has found a good thing and obtained  favour from the Lord" wasn't applicable to Mbet as his own was he who  findeth a wife has found TROUBLES and obtained more TROUBLES from the wife.

Mistakes that would have been abated if they have taken time to know each other was drowning them in a marriage that was ought to be enjoyed.

JOURNEY OF NO RETURN.

The story. The atmosphere was heavy, that of apprehension and uncertainty as Iquo stared at the open space leading into the compound. It was around 10:33pm that evening.  A time in Ikot Ekim community when every household had put off their lamps and retired to bed. The nocturnal sound of night creatures made the night even more looming and intense.  Nsek has never stayed out so late no matter how fierce any argument with his wife was. In their 24 years of marriage, no matter the nature of the fights Iquo has had with her husband he will always come back home to rest in his hut.  As time ticked away, she stared at the open compound, struggling to fend off the call of nature with the hope her husband would appear at the far end of the compound.  Using her hand to support her chin, she wondered how things could change so fast. Her husband Nsek was no longer the man she married. He picked fights at every little argument and would end the night with curses, accusing Iquo of turning his on
